Bhutan is making significant strides in blockchain innovation with the transition of its National Digital Identity (NDI) system from the Polygon blockchain to Ethereum. The move is part of the country’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the security and scalability of its digital infrastructure.
Bhutan has been utilizing Polygon’s blockchain since August 2024 for its NDI system, which supports approximately 800,000 citizens in managing their digital identities.
However, the decision to shift to Ethereum aims to reinforce the security and long-term viability of the system. The full migration is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
According to Jigme Tenzing, Secretary of the GovTech Agency, Bhutan’s decision to move to Ethereum reflects a strategic enhancement of its digital infrastructure. This transition will further strengthen the system’s security, offering residents more robust protection for their online credentials.
Bhutan’s NDI platform is based on self-sovereign identity technology, empowering individuals to control and share their digital credentials with greater privacy and security.

Both Miyaguchi and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin were present at the ceremonial launch in Bhutan, highlighting the nation’s pioneering role in blockchain adoption.
This transition to Ethereum also aligns with Bhutan’s broader strategy of incorporating blockchain technology into its national digital economy. The country has been mining Bitcoin in recent years, helping it accumulate a substantial crypto reserve. Bhutan currently holds 6,371 BTC, making it the world’s sixth-largest government holder of Bitcoin.
