BNB Chain has revealed that a former employee retained unauthorized access to a wallet created for an official token tutorial. According to the company, the wallet was later reused to independently launch the ASTEROID token, exposing a security gap that extends beyond smart contract vulnerabilities and into employee offboarding.


According to BNB Chain, the wallet initially appeared in a tutorial demonstrating how to deploy meme tokens. Although the employee later left the organization, the associated seed phrase remained in their possession. The individual reportedly generated a new private key and deployed ASTEROID without any involvement from BNB Chain.


The company clarified that it had no connection, endorsement, control, or association with the token. Nevertheless, the wallet’s previous appearance in official educational material quickly attracted market attention, with many traders linking the address to BNB Chain because its on-chain history remained publicly visible.


ASTEROID gained momentum within hours of its launch, reaching an estimated market capitalization of nearly $10 million. Its trading volume also exceeded $20.5 million during the same period.


However, market sentiment reversed once BNB Chain issued its public statement, causing the token’s valuation to drop by roughly 52.59%. Consequently, its market capitalization fell below $3 million within about 20 minutes.

Wallet management becomes a growing operational security concern

The incident has shifted attention toward wallet lifecycle management instead of conventional blockchain exploits. Unlike corporate accounts, blockchain wallets cannot simply be disabled when an employee leaves. Anyone who retains a seed phrase can continue accessing the wallet indefinitely.


Moreover, public blockchain records remain permanent. Wallets used in tutorials, marketing campaigns, or educational content can build credibility over time. Consequently, unauthorized reuse of those wallets may create confusion and expose organizations to reputational risks.


Many blockchain projects invest heavily in smart contract audits and multi-signature protection. However, educational wallets often receive less attention during employee offboarding. As a result, unused demonstration wallets may become long-term liabilities if organizations fail to retire them properly.


Stronger wallet governance gains importance

According to the security discussion surrounding the incident, stronger wallet lifecycle management could reduce similar risks across the industry. Projects can rotate wallet credentials, use disposable testnet wallets for demonstrations, and verify every seed phrase during employee exit procedures.


Additionally, organizations can publish on-chain retirement notices for wallets that should no longer represent official activities, helping distinguish inactive corporate addresses from unauthorized future use.


BNB Chain also stated that it is cooperating with relevant authorities while pursuing legal action against the former employee over the unauthorized use of the wallet.
