Summary
- August recorded 50 major crypto hacks, representing a 67% monthly increase, although total industry losses dropped to $136.3 million combined.
- TectonicFi suffered August’s largest exploit at $74 million, but Cronos halted its blockchain before most stolen assets escaped the ecosystem.
- Moonwell, Termlabs, Coinsbuy, TAC, Injective, and platforms recorded smaller losses, showing security weaknesses remained widespread across the broader cryptocurrency sector.
Cryptocurrency platforms recorded 50 security breaches in August, while hackers stole $136.3 million across the industry. According to PeckShieldAlert, the incident count increased 67% from July’s 30 attacks, although losses fell 49.5% from $270 million.
This contrast shows that lower financial damage did not reflect stronger security, as attackers compromised more platforms but extracted less money. TectonicFi dominated August’s figures with a major exploit worth approximately $74 million. The breach represented more than half of all funds stolen during the month. PeckShieldAlert ranked it as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency theft of 2026, behind Drift, KelpDAO, LayerZero, and COLDCARD wallet incidents.
However, the attacker struggled to transfer most of the stolen assets beyond the ecosystem. Only about $6 million crossed to another network before Cronos paused its blockchain. Consequently, most compromised funds remained trapped within the ecosystem, while the exploiter directed laundered assets toward Bitcoin through several transactions.

Smaller Exploits Expose Widespread Security Weaknesses
Several smaller attacks also contributed millions to August’s total, showing that security failures affected cryptocurrency services. Moonwell lost $8.7 million, while Termlabs recorded damages of $8.5 million. Coinsbuy followed with $7.9 million in losses, whereas TAC suffered a $7.5 million breach.
Additionally, Injective lost approximately $4.8 million, while MANTRA reported damages of $3.6 million, and BounceBit recorded losses near $3 million. Cosmos Labs and Aquifer completed the largest listed incidents with respective losses of $2.87 million and $2.47 million.
Although these breaches were smaller than TectonicFi’s exploit, their combined number demonstrated the broad reach of attacks. Moreover, the incidents affected several parts of cryptocurrency infrastructure rather than one particular platform category. The data presents two contrasting security trends for August: while financial losses nearly halved, significant incidents increased by two-thirds.
Conclusion
August demonstrated that lower theft values do not necessarily indicate improved cryptocurrency security. Hackers stole $136.3 million through 50 significant incidents, confirming that vulnerabilities remained widespread across the sector.
