Coinbase Opens IPO Access to US Customers Starting With Oura Shares

In Brief:

  • Coinbase now lets eligible US retail customers request Oura IPO shares at the offer price, though allocations depend on demand.
  • The service uses Coinbase Capital Markets and Apex, expanding the exchange beyond cryptocurrency into direct ownership of newly issued securities.
  • Coinbase is also pursuing equity perpetual approval while expanding stock, portfolio transfer, options, index, and exchange-traded fund services for investors.

Coinbase has opened IPO allocations to eligible US retail customers, beginning with smart ring maker Oura. According to Coinbase’s blog post, customers can request shares at the IPO offer price before public trading begins.

However, submitting a request does not guarantee shares because allocations will depend on demand and the available supply. Customers may receive their full requested allocation, a smaller amount, or nothing when an offering attracts substantial investor interest.

Coinbase will provide the offering through Coinbase Capital Markets, extending its services beyond cryptocurrency and stock trading. Meanwhile, Apex will manage execution, clearing, and custody for shares distributed through the Coinbase application. Oura is the first company available through the service, letting eligible investors buy shares at the offering price.

IPO Access Broadens Coinbase’s Traditional Market Expansion

The product moves Coinbase into primary markets, where companies sell newly issued shares to investors during public offerings. Significantly, the structure differs from the pre-IPO perpetual futures that Coinbase introduced for eligible non-US customers in June.

Those derivatives provide synthetic price exposure to private companies, including SpaceX, without giving holders direct ownership or shareholder rights. By contrast, successful IPO applicants receive actual securities, though participation still depends on eligibility requirements and allocation decisions.

Coinbase has also outlined plans covering stocks, options, indexes, exchange-traded funds, and other traditional financial products. Additionally, US customers can transfer existing stock portfolios onto the platform and trade publicly listed securities.

SEC Filing Supports Coinbase’s Equity Perpetual Expansion

Besides direct stock services, the company is seeking regulatory approval to offer equity perpetual contracts within the United States. Coinbase filed a notice registration form with the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier in September for the planned product.

Equity perpetuals track stock prices without providing ownership, while their open-ended structure removes the expiration dates found in conventional futures. Consequently, approval would add another market service alongside portfolio transfers, stock trading, derivatives, and IPO allocations.

The Oura offering will test customer demand and Coinbase’s ability to distribute limited shares through its expanding financial platform. Its reception could influence how quickly the exchange introduces additional IPO opportunities for eligible retail customers across the United States.
