Ripple’s David Schwartz Reveals How XRP’s $1 Price Sparked T-Shirt Confusion

Ripple’s David Schwartz Reveals How XRP’s $1 Price Sparked T-Shirt Confusion

In Brief:

  • Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz revealed how an XRP Ledger milestone inspired a T-shirt that sparked unexpected price speculation.
  • XRP climbed from approximately $0.30 to $1 during production, leading community members to misinterpret the shirt’s original technical meaning.
  • XRPL processing capacity increased from 80 transactions per second in 2015 to approximately 1,500 transactions per second by 2017.

Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz has revealed how an XRP Ledger performance milestone became linked to XRP’s $1 price. The unexpected connection emerged from a T-shirt celebrating the network’s ability to process 100 transactions per second.

According to Schwartz’s response on X, the shirt originally celebrated a technical achievement rather than a cryptocurrency price target. Yet XRP’s price movement during production gave the design an entirely different meaning among community members.

The explanation followed a question from X user @unknowDLT, who requested clarification about Schwartz’s clothing at Ripple’s Swell event. The shirt featured a speedometer-style design displaying the number 100, prompting speculation about its original significance.

Schwartz explained that XRP traded around $0.30 when the team commissioned the shirt. By the time the clothing arrived, the cryptocurrency had reached approximately $1.

That price movement created an unexpected interpretation of the design, with community members associating its number with XRP’s market value. As Schwartz explained, the team eventually accepted the misunderstanding rather than correcting everyone who interpreted the design differently.

XRP Ledger’s Early Transaction Milestones Reveal the Meaning Behind Schwartz’s Shirt

The original design reflected an important stage in the XRP Ledger’s development, when engineers worked to improve transaction processing capacity.

Schwartz confirmed that the team created the shirt specifically to celebrate XRPL reaching 100 transactions per second. This achievement represented progress in the network’s ability to handle transactions efficiently.

Historical performance records show that XRPL sustained approximately 80 transactions per second during testing in February 2015. Developers subsequently introduced improvements that increased the network’s processing capacity over the following months.

Between March and June 2015, the blockchain demonstrated throughput ranging from 120 to 490 transactions per second. By October 2015, performance improvements had pushed that figure to approximately 525 transactions per second.

XRP Ledger Throughput Reached 1,500 Transactions Per Second

Further development brought another significant increase in 2016, when XRPL achieved throughput approaching 1,100 transactions per second. In July 2017, testing demonstrated a processing capacity of approximately 1,500 transactions per second. That figure later became a widely referenced benchmark for the network’s transaction processing capabilities.

These improvements provide historical context for the milestone behind Schwartz’s T-shirt and its significance to the development team. Meanwhile, Schwartz did not identify the exact date when the team commissioned the original clothing. XRP also traded near $0.30 during several periods, making the precise production timeline difficult to establish.

The explanation nevertheless clarifies why a technical milestone became associated with a memorable moment in XRP’s price history. Schwartz’s account highlights how the cryptocurrency’s price movement changed the community’s understanding of a design originally celebrating network performance.
