MetaMask Advises Caution to Users Regarding Potential Airdrop Scams

MetaMask airdrop scams – Popular Ethereum and other ERC-20 tokens non-custodial wallet MetaMask has warned its users of a fake MetaMask airDrop that had gone viral on the internet especially Twitter.

MetaMask Issues Warning to Users About Scams and Fake Airdrop Offers

According to a Tweet from the official account of MetaMask, they considered the information to be false. They talked about the false rumors going around about a MetaMask Snapshot or airDrop on March 31st.

Fake MetaMask Airdrop

After investigating, we found that the carrier of the false news was a look-alike account of the MetaMask official Twitter. The account came out claiming they were the official MetaMask advertising a fake Mask token airdrop which it claimed was from MetaMask.

The account was later reported and got deleted.

Possible Source of Deceptive Rumors Leading to Fake Airdrops Identified

It is suspected the rumor was linked to an interview the CEO of ConsenSys Joe Lubin had on March 14. The interview happened at the ETHDenver 2023. In the chat, Joe said that his firm is currently working to decentralize MetaMask by launching a token.

While MetaMask has disproved an incoming airdrop, many of the replies from their post on Twitter suggest that they are still hopeful that an airdrop may still be launched, just at a later date.

ConsenSys was contacted for clarification about whether there were plans for a future airdrop. However, we are yet to hear back at the time of publication.

Although activity on MetaMask nearly tripled on the back of the rumors, according to data from DappRadar. The Data shows that the number of transactions on March 27 reached 21,460 from a baseline of approximately 8,000.

MetaMask saw an equal flurry of activity because of rumors of an airdrop back in November 2021. It Followed the recent airdrops from both the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin’s mention of a token.
