Summary
- UAE security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon and co-investors hold 49% of World Liberty Financial’s newly proposed national trust bank holding company.
- USD1 carries a $4 billion market capitalization, while the proposed bank would support issuance, redemption, custody, and currency conversion services.
- Democratic lawmakers are examining UAE-linked investments as federal regulators assess World Liberty Financial’s governance, compliance, and internal operational banking controls.
United Arab Emirates National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan has become a major investor in the Trump family’s banking venture. According to The Wall Street Journal, Tahnoon and other investors own 49% of the holding company established by World Liberty Financial.
Tahnoon, the UAE president’s brother, holds considerable influence across the country’s security, technology, and investment sectors. His involvement brings substantial Abu Dhabi capital into World Liberty Financial’s effort to establish a federally regulated cryptocurrency bank.
World Liberty Financial created WLTC Holdings to support its application for a national trust bank charter in the United States. However, the Journal reported that Tahnoon and his partners used StringZ Holding RSC to make their investment.
The report follows preliminary approval for World Liberty Trust Company from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. That conditional decision allows the company to advance its banking plans while completing additional requirements set by federal regulators.
World Liberty Financial established the trust company to manage stablecoin issuance, redemption, custody, conversion, and cryptocurrency payment access. Moreover, the proposed bank would offer services connecting traditional currencies with digital assets through on-ramp and off-ramp facilities.

USD1 Banking Plans Expand World Liberty Financial’s Reach
World Liberty Financial issues USD1, a dollar-backed stablecoin carrying an estimated market capitalization of approximately $4 billion. Consequently, USD1 ranks as the fourth-largest stablecoin behind major competitors including Tether and Circle’s USDC.
A national trust bank could give World Liberty Financial direct infrastructure for managing USD1 reserves, custody, issuance, and redemptions. However, Tahnoon’s investment has drawn political attention because President Donald Trump’s family maintains financial ties to World Liberty Financial.
Earlier Journal reporting revealed that a Tahnoon-backed investment vehicle acquired 49% of World Liberty Financial for $500 million. According to the report, investors completed that transaction only days before President Trump began his current term in office.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly rejected claims that the financial relationship created conflicts involving the president. Kelly argued that President Trump acts in the interests of Americans despite accusations concerning his family’s commercial activities.
Democratic Lawmakers Seek Greater Investment Transparency
Democratic lawmakers have increased efforts to examine financial connections between the Trump family and members of Abu Dhabi’s royal family. Senior Senate Democrats have urged Republican leaders to organize hearings concerning the UAE-linked investments in World Liberty Financial.
Additionally, House Democrats have pursued separate inquiries into funds entering the cryptocurrency company from the UAE royal family. Representative Ro Khanna launched an investigation in February examining payments involving World Liberty Financial and its foreign investors.
His inquiry seeks information about ownership arrangements, participating entities, investment terms, and the destination of UAE-linked funds. The OCC’s preliminary approval places those political concerns alongside an active federal assessment of World Liberty Financial’s proposed banking operations.
Before launching services, the company must satisfy regulatory conditions connected to governance, compliance, risk management, and operational controls. Tahnoon’s ownership position gives UAE-linked investors significant exposure to a venture combining stablecoins, custody services, and federally supervised banking.
The arrangement also links World Liberty Financial’s banking ambitions with earlier foreign investment involving the Trump family’s cryptocurrency business. Regulators will determine whether the trust company meets federal requirements before permitting it to operate as a national bank.
Meanwhile, congressional inquiries will examine the investment structure and its possible implications for President Trump’s financial interests.
