Vitalik Buterin Warns Ethereum Scaling Could Threaten Network Decentralization

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has issued a strong warning on the risks of specific scaling solutions that could compromise the network’s decentralized structure. As the blockchain pushes for improved performance and higher transaction speeds, Buterin stressed that decentralization must not be sacrificed.

Buterin emphasized in his detailed report that decentralization must be kept, regardless of the progress in scaling Layer 1 on Ethereum. He highlighted that node operators must always trust the accuracy of the data they access, especially when connecting through external Remote Procedure Call (RPC) endpoints.

Advanced scaling tools for blockchains, according to Buterin, could lead to serious drawbacks due to their inherent risks. The high cost of implementation, potential loss of metadata privacy, and risk of censorship by controlling entities must all be carefully considered.

Additionally, Buterin said that when keeping a personal node becomes challenging or too costly, people could switch to solutions provided by others. As a result, he warned that Ethereum would become less secure against third-party actions.

Buterin Pushes for Stateless Nodes to Keep Ethereum Open and Accessible

To counter these risks, Buterin is advocating for a stateless verification model. This approach allows nodes to validate transactions without storing the whole blockchain state, making it easier for individuals to participate in the network.

He stated that this move would mean that fewer resources would be needed, storing would cost less and more people would start running their own nodes. Having easy-to-use nodes is essential in maintaining Ethereum’s strength and keeping it decentralized as people’s interest grows.

He mentioned that relying on a distributed system is essential for Ethereum’s future success. Sharing data using each member’s history allows the network to grow without compromising users’ trust.

Buterin also pointed out that a distributed storage system is necessary for Ethereum’s long-term health. Those who create and use cryptocurrencies must ensure that enhancing performance does not make a dominant central force.

Vitalik Buterin has helped us realize that decentralization must not be sacrificed in the effort to scale Ethereum. When advancements are made, it is essential to maintain the network’s core standards.
