XRP Ledger’s DID Amendment Goes Live, Paving the Way for Decentralized Identities in Web3

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is advancing rapidly by activating its latest core upgrade, the DID amendment, which is now live on-chain. This amendment marks a significant step in simplifying decentralized identities (DIDs) in Web3. The DID update went live after completing a two-week activation period, approved by 30 out of 35 validators through a mutual consensus process. With this amendment, XRPL aims to address pressing challenges in identity verification and data ownership within Web3.

DID Amendment Brings Decentralized Identities to XRPL

According to Mayukha Vadari, a developer at RippleX, a DID operates similarly to a fingerprint in the physical world, carrying value when used in specific contexts. This upgrade allows XRPL users to create DID documents and connect them to on-chain DID objects. By design, the DID provides tamper-proof identification because no two people can mimic another person’s identity. Reacting to the DID amendment, Vadari noted that the decentralized identity transforms it to fit the W3C standard, which allows extensibility across various Web3 environments.

DID has gained significant attention among members of the blockchain industry, especially concerning its ability to address data control and security. The audit of ownership of personal data is expected to be an exciting topic in Web3, and DIDs may solve such problems more effectively. Other networks like Cardano are already considering similar ideas; they understand that DIDs can provide trustworthy and provable identity solutions in decentralized environments.

Besides the latest DID update, XRP Ledger has progressed in different aspects in the last year, including AMM improvements. These advancements reflect XRPL’s broader commitment to innovation and adaptability within the rapidly changing blockchain environment.

The DID amendment represents another step in the XRPL’s mission to support more robust decentralized identity solutions within the ecosystem. With this latest update, XRPL continues to establish itself as a leader in developing secure, accessible, and efficient infrastructure for the Web3 world.
