In a recent message on X, Buterin urged developers and community members to rethink Ethereum’s role beyond financial applications. He explained that the network should function as an open digital environment where independent participants interact without centralized oversight.
Ethereum Should Not Mirror Big Tech Models
According to Buterin, Ethereum should avoid following the same trajectory as large technology companies such as Apple and Google. He argued that crypto should not become another efficiency-focused tech sector competing with existing corporate platforms. Instead, he described Ethereum as infrastructure designed to host cooperative digital spaces.
These environments allow individuals, organizations, and communities to interact without depending on dominant intermediaries. Additionally, Buterin said Ethereum’s broader purpose involves protecting values such as privacy, autonomy, and digital security. His message also called on developers to align around shared principles guiding the ecosystem’s future development.

Concerns Over Crypto’s Real-World Impact
Over the past year, Buterin has increased his public commentary about Ethereum’s direction and responsibilities. These remarks have addressed wider issues, including surveillance capitalism, online manipulation, and geopolitical tensions affecting digital infrastructure. At the same time, he acknowledged that some observers believe Ethereum has not yet delivered meaningful improvements for people affected by those challenges.
Buterin noted that the network still appears largely absent from addressing social concerns tied to digital security and freedom. Those concerns include online privacy, community coordination, and the protection of individual autonomy within digital systems. His remarks reflected broader discussions across the crypto sector about whether blockchain technology can meaningfully influence social and political structures.
Ethereum’s Vision of “Sanctuary Technologies”
Furthermore, Buterin introduced the concept of sanctuary technologies as a framework for Ethereum’s development. These technologies would remain open-source systems designed to withstand pressure from powerful external actors. According to Buterin, sanctuary technologies should allow individuals to communicate, collaborate, and manage financial risks within decentralized digital environments.

De-totalization and the Limits of Digital Power
Buterin also discussed the concept of “de-totalization” when describing Ethereum’s long-term purpose. The idea focuses on reducing the likelihood that any government, corporation, or institution gains total control over digital life.
He explained that decentralized systems can lower the stakes of conflicts within digital ecosystems. These systems prevent dominant actors from securing complete victories over competitors or opponents.
Furthermore, Buterin argued that decentralized technologies could prevent situations where losing parties face total exclusion from digital platforms. Such an approach would maintain balance between competing participants across online networks.
His comments also echoed ideas from early cypherpunk thinkers who warned about centralized control and mass surveillance decades earlier. Those early advocates promoted encryption and open networks as tools for protecting individual freedoms in the digital age.
