Samson Mow Warns Against Rushing Bitcoin Into Post-Quantum Cryptography

Bitcoin developer and JAN3 CEO Samson Mow has warned against rushing Bitcoin into post-quantum cryptography, arguing that an early transition could introduce greater security risks than the quantum threat itself. According to Mow, Bitcoin should maintain its conservative development philosophy until quantum computers pose a practical risk to the network.


Mow shared his views in a post on X while responding to new research from Anthropic. The company’s Mythos Preview AI model identified improved attacks against weakened cryptographic algorithms. However, the findings do not threaten Bitcoin’s existing cryptographic systems.


According to Mow, developers should avoid replacing Bitcoin’s ECDSA and Schnorr signature schemes before quantum computing reaches a practical stage. He explained that introducing post-quantum signatures too early could expose Bitcoin to conventional computing attacks instead.


Moreover, Mow argued that Bitcoin’s security has always benefited from careful and measured development. He stressed that protocol changes should only happen when there is a demonstrated need rather than a theoretical concern. Consequently, he believes the network should prioritize proven security over speculative upgrades.


He also highlighted ongoing work by Blockstream cryptographers, noting that hash-based signature schemes present a smaller mathematical attack surface than lattice-based alternatives such as HAWK, making them worthy of further research.

Anthropic findings revive cryptography debate

Anthropic’s latest research discovered a substantially faster attack against a reduced-round version of the Advanced Encryption Standard. Additionally, researchers improved a known private-key recovery attack targeting the HAWK post-quantum signature scheme.


However, Anthropic clarified that neither discovery poses an immediate threat to existing cryptographic systems. Instead, the research illustrates how artificial intelligence could accelerate cryptographic analysis and reveal weaknesses more efficiently.


According to Ledger Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet, the findings demonstrate how artificial intelligence is reshaping cybersecurity and modern cryptography. He noted that the research targets HAWK’s newer security assumptions rather than lattice cryptography as a whole.


Furthermore, Guillemet explained that established schemes, including Dilithium, rely on security assumptions that have undergone much broader academic review. Therefore, he cautioned against interpreting the study as evidence that lattice-based cryptography has become unreliable.


He also argued that the research strengthens the case for crypto-agility, which allows software to replace cryptographic algorithms without redesigning entire systems. According to Guillemet, that flexibility will become increasingly important as cryptographic standards evolve and new security challenges emerge.
