DOJ Seizes Over $560,000 in Cryptocurrency Linked to Hamas Fundraising

DOJ Seizes Over $560,000 in Cryptocurrency Linked to Hamas Fundraising

In Brief:

  • U.S. authorities seized over $560,000 in cryptocurrency and captured digital infrastructure allegedly supporting fundraising operations connected to Hamas and Al-Qassam.
  • FBI investigators traced changing wallet addresses and identified thousands of online contacts linked to cryptocurrency donation inquiries for the group.
  • Earlier seizures targeted $201,400 in cryptocurrency, while authorities also pursued $2 million linked to sanctioned Gaza-based financial services business Buy Cash.

The U.S. Justice Department seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency linked to fundraising for Hamas and its military wing. According to a September 1 DOJ and FBI announcement, authorities also captured websites, domains, and servers supporting the operation. Officials believe these digital resources helped collect and transfer donations for Hamas and the Al-Qassam Brigades.

Investigators obtained three seizure warrants covering cryptocurrency transactions completed during 2025. Moreover, court documents show that organizers changed wallet addresses, making donation flows harder for authorities to track.

The FBI also identified thousands of people who contacted Hamas online regarding cryptocurrency contributions. Consequently, investigators could use those communications to locate other transactions connected to the suspected fundraising network.

FBI Traces Wider Cryptocurrency Activity

The operation follows a separate March 2025 seizure involving approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrency. Court documents revealed that the associated wallets had transferred more than $1.5 million since late 2024.

Additionally, the Justice Department targeted $2 million in digital currency connected to Buy Cash, a Gaza-based financial services business. The U.S. Treasury previously sanctioned the company over its alleged involvement in financing militant organizations.

Hamas announced in 2023 that it would stop accepting cryptocurrency donations because blockchain records exposed contributors. However, the transactions identified within the warrants suggest fundraising linked to the group allegedly persisted afterward.

Authorities Target Supporting Online Infrastructure

Beyond confiscating cryptocurrency, authorities targeted the technical infrastructure that allegedly enabled the fundraising operation. Websites could publish wallet addresses and donation instructions, while servers supported communication between organizers and potential contributors.

Hence, taking control of those systems may restrict access to payment information while preserving evidence. Investigators can examine the recovered records to trace additional transactions and identify other participants within the alleged financing network.

The enforcement strategy combines cryptocurrency tracing with actions against online resources that support suspected transfers. Significantly, authorities are pursuing both money already collected and systems that could facilitate future donations.

The Justice Department has not disclosed whether the investigation will produce criminal charges or further seizures. Nevertheless, information gathered from wallets, websites, and servers could reveal additional activity associated with the network.
