FBI and Australian Police Dismantle Global Crypto Laundering Network

Summary

  • FBI and Australian police dismantled TeamPCP, whose malicious software allegedly compromised 1,000 organizations and exposed over 500,000 credentials across multiple countries.
  • Investigators traced cryptocurrency payments across mixers and wallets, while authorities seized digital assets and property allegedly linked to criminal proceeds.
  • Australian prosecutors filed 14 combined charges, while Thomson also faces a United States indictment and possible additional investigations and arrests.

The FBI and Australian police have dismantled an alleged international cybercrime network that laundered cryptocurrency from global software supply-chain attacks. According to an FBI post on X, authorities arrested 21-year-old Ruben Ian Thomson and 23-year-old Louis Michael Gaebler during coordinated searches across Perth, Western Australia.

Both men allegedly belonged to TeamPCP, a cybercrime group accused of embedding malicious code within trusted open-source software development tools. Consequently, the malware potentially compromised more than 1,000 organizations and exposed over 500,000 user credentials across several countries.

Investigators also believe the operation extracted at least 300 gigabytes of corporate information from affected systems.

Cryptocurrency Transactions Connected the Operation

TeamPCP members allegedly sold access to compromised networks through underground marketplaces, where buyers completed payments using cryptocurrency. Investigators claim the group transferred criminal proceeds through cryptocurrency mixers and multiple wallets to obscure transaction histories.

However, blockchain records helped authorities follow payments across wallet addresses, trading platforms, and national jurisdictions. According to the U.S. Embassy in Australia on X, the operation disrupted cryptocurrency laundering channels supporting the alleged syndicate.

Authorities also seized substantial cryptocurrency holdings and premium property allegedly purchased with proceeds from criminal activities. Additionally, affected organizations have reportedly incurred remediation costs reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.

Australian and American Prosecutors File Charges

Australian prosecutors charged both men with 14 combined offences connected to their alleged involvement in TeamPCP operations. Thomson faces another charge involving criminal proceeds exceeding $100,000, while some Australian offences carry prison terms reaching 20 years.

Meanwhile, a United States federal grand jury indicted Thomson for alleged violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. American prosecutors accuse him of conspiring to compromise trusted supply-chain security tools under the TeamPCP name.

FBI officials stressed that computer screens cannot protect cybercriminals from coordinated international law enforcement investigations. Furthermore, investigators are reviewing extensive seized data and have not ruled out additional arrests or criminal charges. Authorities will pursue their separate prosecutions while tracing remaining cryptocurrency transactions.
