Injective Brings South Korean Won Onchain as BDACS Introduces KRW1 Stablecoin

Summary

  • Injective is bringing the Korean won on-chain through KRW1, a stablecoin issued by BDACS with reserves held at a bank.
  • Korean cryptocurrency exchanges recorded approximately $10.4 billion in stablecoin outflows over 18 consecutive months, highlighting demand for alternative settlement options.
  • BDACS will manage KRW1 issuance, while Injective has yet to disclose its launch date, supported platforms, and reserve verification arrangements.

South Korean digital asset custodian BDACS is bringing the Korean won onto Injective through KRW1, a stablecoin backed by bank-held reserves. The initiative aims to introduce won-denominated transactions into blockchain markets that largely rely on US dollar stablecoins.

According to Injective’s announcement on X, BDACS will issue KRW1 as part of the network’s expanding real-world asset ecosystem. A major Korean bank will hold the stablecoin’s reserves, providing a banking connection for the planned digital currency.

The development introduces another option for Korean investors seeking blockchain-based financial services without relying entirely on dollar-denominated assets. It also connects domestic currency infrastructure with Injective’s existing ecosystem for tokenized financial products. Injective identified KRW1 as Korea’s first won-backed stablecoin, although its announcement did not identify the bank holding the reserves.

KRW1 Stablecoin Targets $10.4 Billion in Korean Crypto Outflows

Injective linked the initiative to growing demand for onchain markets among Korean investors and the dominance of dollar-based settlement systems. The network identified substantial stablecoin movements from Korean exchanges toward offshore cryptocurrency platforms.

According to Injective, exchanges including Upbit and Binance recorded 18 consecutive months of net stablecoin outflows totaling approximately $10.4 billion. The figures highlight the scale of cross-border stablecoin movements associated with Korean cryptocurrency trading activity.

Most international cryptocurrency markets rely on dollar-denominated stablecoins for trading, transfers, and settlement between platforms. Consequently, Korean investors frequently encounter dollar-based assets when accessing blockchain financial products beyond domestic markets.

KRW1 seeks to address that currency gap by introducing a won-backed digital asset into Injective’s blockchain infrastructure. Its proposed structure would allow Korean won exposure within an ecosystem supporting tokenized assets and other financial applications.

BDACS and Injective Outline KRW1 Reserve Structure and Market Integration

BDACS will handle stablecoin issuance while an unnamed Korean banking institution maintains the underlying reserves. This arrangement separates the issuance process from the custody of assets supporting the token’s value.

The announcement places KRW1 within Injective’s broader real-world asset strategy, which involves bringing traditional financial instruments onto blockchain networks. Still, Injective has not disclosed specific trading platforms, payment integrations, or financial applications that will support KRW1.

Further details about reserve verification, regulatory arrangements, and token availability remain outstanding following the announcement. These disclosures will help establish how the stablecoin operates within Korea’s financial and digital asset markets.

The initiative adds a Korean won-backed asset to Injective’s tokenization infrastructure while expanding the network’s support for local currency transactions.
