Netanyahu Orders Blockchain Plan as Israel Prepares for Potential Banking Sanctions

Summary

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested a blockchain strategy to protect financial operations against potential international sanctions and banking restrictions.
  • Netanyahu confirmed government interest in blockchain alternatives but provided no details about participating institutions, digital currencies, or the implementation timeline.
  • Israel allocated approximately $129 billion toward defense spending as Netanyahu emphasized military independence and uncertainty surrounding future American political leadership.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a blockchain strategy to prepare Israel for potential international sanctions and banking restrictions. The proposal forms part of broader preparations to protect financial operations if foreign restrictions disrupt access to conventional banking services.

During an interview broadcast Friday on Israel’s Channel 10, Netanyahu warned that the country must prepare for possible economic pressure.

“We need to understand that there could be sanctions, including banking sanctions,” Netanyahu stated during the interview.

He argued that Israel needs financial arrangements capable of operating even when traditional banking channels face restrictions. Interviewer Roy Katz then asked whether blockchain technology could offer an alternative for handling potential sanctions against Israel.

“One of them, certainly. I have already asked for a plan to be prepared for that,” Netanyahu replied.

Netanyahu did not identify who would develop the plan, which blockchain networks it might involve, or any proposed digital currencies. He also provided no timetable for completing the strategy or introducing blockchain-based financial arrangements.

Beyond potential banking sanctions, Netanyahu outlined preparations to reduce Israel’s dependence on foreign military assistance and strengthen domestic production. The prime minister acknowledged American support but warned that Israel could not assume such assistance would remain available indefinitely.

“It’s only a matter of time,” Netanyahu remarked while discussing the eventual end of American military assistance.

He emphasized expanding Israel’s ability to manufacture ammunition and weapons independently, alongside efforts to strengthen national economic resilience. Netanyahu announced an additional 400 billion shekels, approximately $129 billion, for defense spending over the coming years.

The funding supports wider efforts to increase domestic military production and prepare for changing international conditions. Meanwhile, Netanyahu addressed Israel’s relationship with Washington and the possibility of a different political environment under future American leadership.

He described President Donald Trump as exceptionally supportive of Israel but acknowledged uncertainty surrounding subsequent American administrations. Netanyahu urged preparations for a less favorable relationship once Trump’s presidency ends, reinforcing his emphasis on national independence.
