In Brief:
- Avalanche founder Emin Gün Sirer warns that artificial intelligence could uncover hidden XRP Ledger vulnerabilities, exposing blockchain networks to attacks.
- XRP Ledger developers addressed security vulnerabilities through an emergency software update, subsequently releasing withheld source code and detailed technical explanations.
- Vitalik Buterin and other blockchain researchers raised cryptographic security concerns, while Sirer emphasized existing software flaws as immediate threats.
Avalanche founder Emin Gün Sirer has warned that artificial intelligence could expose undiscovered software weaknesses within the XRP Ledger. According to Sirer, attackers may exploit hidden coding flaws before advances in artificial intelligence threaten established cryptographic protections. His warning identifies software security as an immediate concern for blockchain networks.
In an X post, Sirer argued that advanced AI models could identify vulnerabilities overlooked during conventional software reviews. Such flaws could affect blockchain applications, software libraries, and cryptocurrency wallets.
He referenced Ripple while challenging assumptions that valuable blockchains contain no undiscovered flaws. Such weaknesses are commonly called zero-day vulnerabilities because developers lack an available fix when attackers discover or exploit them.
Such attacks could expose billions without defeating transaction cryptography. Nevertheless, he presented no evidence of an AI-powered XRP Ledger attack or any specific outstanding vulnerability.

XRP Ledger Security Update Draws Attention to Software Risks

The warning follows an emergency XRP Ledger release on September 25. Version 3.4.1 corrected a payment engine overflow vulnerability and introduced protections against incorrectly wrapped Batch transactions. Developers initially withheld source code while operators deployed the update.
A disclosure published October 9 detailed both vulnerabilities and confirmed that developers had released the previously withheld source code.
The report explained that one payment engine flaw could potentially create unauthorized XRP through specially constructed transactions. Another issue involved Batch transaction validation and carried potential consequences for network consensus under certain conditions. Neither disclosure attributed the vulnerabilities to AI discovery, nor established any connection between the fixes and Sirer’s warning.
Broader AI Security Debate Divides Blockchain Researchers
Sirer’s comments also follow warnings from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin concerning AI-assisted discoveries affecting lattice-based cryptographic assumptions. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson disputed those projections, questioning whether mathematical evidence supports the proposed timeframe.
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake separately raised concerns about future threats to the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm. Sirer acknowledged potential cryptographic risks while emphasizing software defects that attackers might discover using increasingly capable AI systems.
His remarks therefore distinguish possible future attacks on cryptography from vulnerabilities already present within blockchain software implementations.
