What to Know
- Coinbase is repositioning the Base app into a multi-chain trading platform supporting assets across multiple blockchain networks under new leadership.
- Jordan Fish now leads the Base app while Jesse Pollak focuses on expanding Base blockchain infrastructure and decentralized finance growth.
- Base processes more than $1 billion in daily trading volume while Coinbase expands prediction markets and perpetual futures across ecosystems.
Coinbase is repositioning its Base app beyond its own blockchain, expanding its crypto trading ambitions across multiple blockchain networks. Base creator Jesse Pollak explained during The Starting Block podcast that the app will prioritize broader trading over growing Base alone. Jordan “Cobie” Fish assumed leadership of the Base app following Coinbase’s acquisition of crypto fundraising platform Echo.
Pollak explained that Fish will build the strongest trading product while Base competes through technology, liquidity and execution quality. Moreover, Pollak noted that the blockchain must earn its place through performance instead of preferential treatment within Coinbase’s ecosystem. He added that this approach creates stronger incentives for the network to improve its services.

Coinbase separates the app from the Base blockchain strategy
According to Pollak, the Base app already allows users to trade assets across nearly every major crypto ecosystem. Coinbase is also expanding its product lineup with prediction markets and perpetual futures as it broadens the platform’s capabilities.
Besides adding new features, the company wants to make digital asset trading easier for newcomers. Pollak explained that reducing complexity remains an important objective as the app reaches beyond the Base ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Pollak has shifted his attention to developing the Base blockchain itself. He said demand for tokenization, payments, decentralized finance and trading infrastructure has grown significantly, requiring dedicated leadership on the network side.
Additionally, Pollak revealed that Base now secures nearly $5 billion in decentralized finance assets. The blockchain also processes more than $1 billion in daily trading volume, reflecting rising activity across its ecosystem.
Competition has intensified as companies including Robinhood and Stripe invest in blockchain infrastructure. However, Pollak described their entry as confirmation that more financial services are moving onchain rather than a threat to Base’s position.
He added that every blockchain platform must compete by offering better liquidity, execution quality and infrastructure. Consequently, the Base blockchain will compete on its own merits while the app serves users across multiple networks.
Pollak welcomes growing competition across onchain finance
Pollak believes the digital asset industry remains in its early stages despite increasing institutional participation. He argued that the overall opportunity remains large enough for multiple companies to expand simultaneously.
Furthermore, he said Coinbase’s long-term objective extends beyond supporting a single blockchain. Instead, the company wants the Base app to become an accessible gateway for trading digital assets regardless of their underlying network.
Pollak said Coinbase is separating the responsibilities of the Base app and the Base blockchain as both products mature. Fish will focus on building a multi-chain trading platform, while Pollak concentrates on strengthening the blockchain’s infrastructure as competition across onchain finance accelerates.
