The Ethereum Foundation has funded the development of WEBCAT, an open-source security tool designed to protect crypto users from compromised websites. According to a statement shared by the Ethereum Foundation, the initiative forms part of the foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security program and targets a critical weakness affecting browser-based crypto applications.


The grant supports the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which develops WEBCAT, to integrate the technology into Ethereum wallets and decentralized applications. Consequently, wallets will verify that an application’s code matches a version signed by its developers before users approve transactions.


According to the Ethereum Foundation, HTTPS protects internet connections but cannot detect malicious code injected into a website’s front end. Attackers can exploit that weakness to modify transaction details, replace recipient addresses, or manipulate signing requests without users realizing the changes.


Instead, WEBCAT compares website code against developer-signed release manifests before allowing wallet interactions. If verification fails, the tool blocks the page and alerts users about the potential security risk. As a result, users gain another layer of protection against phishing campaigns and compromised decentralized applications.

Ethereum expands wallet security beyond transaction verification

According to the statement, the funding extends beyond the verification technology itself. Developers will receive implementation support while researchers improve compatibility with Chromium-based browsers. Additionally, the project includes an independent security review to evaluate the software before broader deployment.


Moreover, the initiative will support the development of a new Ethereum Request for Comments standard for wallet integrations. A common standard could simplify implementation across wallets while encouraging wider adoption throughout the Ethereum ecosystem.


The foundation also noted that WEBCAT complements its Clear Signing initiative rather than replacing it. Clear Signing helps users understand transaction details before approval, while WEBCAT verifies that the website presenting those transactions has not been altered by attackers.


The initiative strengthens Ethereum’s broader security strategy by addressing risks that exist beyond blockchain networks themselves. Browser-based attacks remain a persistent challenge for decentralized applications, making website verification an important safeguard. Combined with Clear Signing, WEBCAT adds another protective layer that helps users confirm both transaction details and website authenticity before approving wallet interactions.
