MoonPay Brings AI Payments to ChatGPT and Claude With User-Controlled PayBox

  • MoonPay launched PayBox, enabling ChatGPT and Claude users to prepare crypto and card payments while retaining transaction approval through passkeys.
  • PayBox supports multiple blockchains, x402 integrations, and dual permission models while protecting wallet keys with advanced security technologies.
  • MoonPay expanded its AI ecosystem through PayBox, acquisitions, and planned decentralized finance features under user-controlled approval rules and safeguards.

MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that allows ChatGPT and Claude users to initiate crypto and card payments directly from conversations. The platform gives AI assistants the ability to prepare transactions while users retain control through passkey approvals or predefined spending limits.

Users connect PayBox to ChatGPT or Claude through a custom connector before creating or importing a crypto wallet. They can also add payment cards and fund the vault through an existing wallet or an approved payment method. Once configured, the AI assistant can prepare payments for flight bookings, restaurant reservations, online shopping, and other supported services.

Moreover, MoonPay Labs Chief Engineer Neeraj Prasad explained that PayBox combines crypto wallets and payment cards within a non-custodial vault. According to Prasad, the platform supports blockchain transactions, decentralized finance applications, and services using the x402 payment standard without requiring users to surrender custody of their assets.

PayBox launches with support for Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible blockchains, including Ethereum, Base, Hyperliquid, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Tempo. MoonPay also plans to expand support to additional blockchain networks.

Security framework limits AI access to user funds

Users can choose between two permission models depending on how they want AI assistants to handle payments. The “Always Ask” option requires passkey approval for every transaction. Meanwhile, the “Autonomous” option allows payments within spending limits established by the user.

Additionally, PayBox works with any service supporting the x402 payment standard. Current integrations include AgentRes.dev for restaurant reservations, Purch.xyz for online shopping, and BRIJ.fi for flight bookings. Coinbase originally developed x402 before governance moved to the Linux Foundation. The standard also receives backing from more than 20 organizations, including AWS, Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, and Anthropic.

According to MoonPay, neither the company nor AI assistants can independently access user funds or payment credentials. Instead, wallet keys remain protected through multi-party computation and trusted execution environments. Consequently, no single party possesses enough information to authorize transactions on its own.

Prasad also explained that PayBox uses Visa’s agentic commerce protocol for card payments. As a result, AI assistants complete purchases without exposing underlying card details. He added that each passkey approval applies to only one transaction, preventing captured approvals from being reused.

MoonPay expands its AI payment strategy

PayBox builds on several artificial intelligence initiatives introduced by MoonPay over the past year. The company acquired AI accounting startup Entendre and AI trading startup Dawn Labs, which Prasad founded. It also launched MoonPay Agents, the Open Wallet Standard, and the MoonAgents Card to support secure AI-powered crypto payments.

Furthermore, PayBox relies on key management infrastructure from Sodot, another company MoonPay acquired earlier this year. That technology distributes wallet security across isolated environments to strengthen protection against unauthorized access.

Conclusion

MoonPay plans to expand PayBox by adding token swaps, perpetual futures trading, and liquidity management under the same user-defined approval framework. Prasad also indicated that support for additional AI platforms is expected within the next month, extending the service beyond ChatGPT and Claude while preserving its security model.
