S&P Dow Jones Indices has completed its first on-chain index derivatives trade on Canton Network, which recently gained Ripple Custody support. According to transaction details, market maker DRW and financial services group Marex executed the swap through the Derivnex platform.

The transaction involved an over-the-counter total return swap linked to the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index. Market data provider Kaiko distributed the index information across Canton Network, supporting the execution of the tokenized derivative.

Both counterparties used a shared blockchain interface to manage the transaction, replacing separate systems traditionally used for derivatives processing. This approach allowed participants to access consistent transaction records while reducing the need for manual reconciliation. Additionally, the platform followed International Swaps and Derivatives Association standards, supporting coordinated management throughout the derivative’s lifecycle.

DRW founder and CEO Don Wilson highlighted the operational challenges associated with uncleared OTC derivatives and their complex workflows. Wilson explained that shared transaction records could simplify processing and reduce administrative requirements between trading counterparties.

Ripple Custody Integration Expands Institutional Access to Canton Network

Ripple’s involvement comes through its custody infrastructure, which introduced Canton Network support with version 1.43 on October 5. The integration allows financial institutions to manage Canton Coin and CIP-56 assets through Ripple Custody’s institutional software.

Furthermore, the system supports a bring-your-own-validator model, enabling customers to retain transaction signing keys within their existing security infrastructure. This arrangement allows institutions to access Canton assets while maintaining control over their custody operations and security arrangements. Canton Network operates independently from Ripple, and the integration does not involve XRP, XRP Ledger, or RLUSD settlements.

Canton Network Plans to Expand Blockchain-Based Derivatives Settlement

Canton’s permissioned architecture has attracted criticism from decentralization advocates who question its restricted network structure. Despite these concerns, the transaction demonstrates how institutional participants can use distributed ledgers to manage traditional financial instruments.

DRW and Marex also plan to introduce cash settlements and collateral management directly through Canton Network. These capabilities would extend blockchain processing beyond trade execution into additional stages of derivatives management.
