What to Know:
- Ripple extended its NYU Abu Dhabi partnership through 2027, providing funding for blockchain research, education, and practical decentralized technology applications.
- NYUAD researchers will expand the Volta initiative while examining blockchain solutions for market efficiency, trade barriers, and broader economic access.
- Ripple’s academic partnership complements its UAE expansion, including RLUSD approval in Abu Dhabi and its regional headquarters established in Dubai.
Ripple has extended its blockchain research partnership with New York University Abu Dhabi, securing academic collaboration through 2027. The renewed agreement provides financial support through Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative, which funds blockchain research and educational programs.
According to Ripple Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa Reece Merrick, the renewed partnership strengthens NYUAD’s expanding role as a regional center for blockchain research and economic applications. Moreover, the extension strengthens a relationship that connects university research with practical projects addressing trade, financial technology, and economic participation.
Professors Raša Karapandža and Yaw Nyarko will lead research examining how decentralized technologies could improve markets and reduce trade barriers. Their work will examine blockchain systems through economic research while testing potential applications under practical market conditions.

Ripple funding backs blockchain research and Volta expansion
One major project receiving support is Volta, a blockchain-based mobile application designed to facilitate trade among smallholder farmers in Ghana. Researchers are examining whether decentralized infrastructure can reduce trading obstacles and improve access to markets for participating agricultural communities.
Additionally, NYUAD plans to expand the Volta project into more regions as researchers move into its next development phase. Ripple’s funding will also support fintech education and venture development, giving students opportunities to create and test blockchain-based applications.
Students can develop early-stage ventures, while researchers will conduct practical work involving the XRP Ledger and other decentralized technologies. Karapandža expects the renewed support to help NYUAD researchers connect established economic theories with blockchain applications addressing practical problems.
Meanwhile, Nyarko believes blockchain-based systems could offer researchers new ways to study access to economic opportunities across different communities. Ripple Senior Director of University Partnerships Lauren Weymouth described NYUAD as UBRI’s regional hub for blockchain research across the Middle East.
NYUAD agreement strengthens Ripple’s broader UAE presence
The extended university partnership also fits Ripple’s wider expansion across the United Arab Emirates and its regulated digital-asset industry. Abu Dhabi Global Market approved Ripple USD for use within its financial framework in November 2025.
Consequently, authorized companies operating under ADGM regulations can use RLUSD within the international financial center’s regulated digital-asset environment. Abu Dhabi has also attracted institutional cryptocurrency initiatives as regulators establish frameworks supporting regulated digital-asset services and blockchain infrastructure.
Beyond Abu Dhabi, Ripple has expanded its operational presence through the Dubai International Financial Centre, another major regional financial center. In April 2026, Ripple opened its Middle East and Africa regional headquarters within the DIFC as part of its UAE strategy.
XRP had already gained approval for use within the DIFC in 2023, giving Ripple another regulatory connection within the country. The NYUAD extension adds an academic component to that strategy while funding blockchain research, education, venture development, and practical applications through 2027.
