South Korea Mirae Asset Raises Korbit Stake to 97% After Acquisition Deal Closes

  • Mirae Asset increased its Korbit ownership to 97.15%, securing stronger control of South Korea’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange through regulatory approval.
  • Korbit confirmed customer deposits, operating structure, and data management will remain unchanged under Mirae Asset’s expanded ownership framework.
  • CoinGecko ranked Korbit fourth by trading volume, while Upbit retained domestic dominance despite Mirae Asset’s investment strengthening competition.

South Korea’s Mirae Asset has increased its ownership of cryptocurrency exchange Korbit to 97.15%, strengthening its presence in the country’s regulated digital asset market. According to Korbit, Mirae Asset Consulting became the exchange’s largest shareholder after completing the required regulatory procedures for the controlling acquisition.

Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of Mirae Asset Financial Group, also filed a revised regulatory disclosure to acquire additional Korbit shares worth about $5.32 million. The purchase will increase its ownership from 92.06% to 97.15%, with local reports indicating the transaction is expected to close on Friday.

Korbit confirmed that the ownership change will not affect its operating entity, customer deposits, or personal data management. Consequently, existing users will continue accessing the platform under the same operational framework.

Regulatory Approval Supports Digital Asset Expansion

South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission approved the acquisition earlier this month, allowing Mirae Asset to complete the controlling investment. The regulator described the transaction as the country’s first acquisition of a cryptocurrency exchange by an affiliate of a traditional financial group.

Moreover, Mirae Asset Consulting explained that the acquisition supports its strategy of securing future growth through digital assets while giving the financial group greater influence over Korbit’s long-term business direction.

Besides expanding its digital asset portfolio, Mirae Asset has strengthened its presence in one of Asia’s most regulated cryptocurrency markets, reflecting increasing participation by traditional financial institutions in licensed digital asset businesses.

Korbit emphasized that customers will not experience operational changes following the ownership increase, confirming that its legal operating structure, deposit management, and personal data handling policies will remain unchanged.

Maintaining those existing safeguards allows Korbit to preserve its services under expanded ownership while reaffirming its commitment to the same customer protections throughout the ownership transition.

Trading Volumes Show Korbit’s Market Position

CoinGecko ranks Korbit as South Korea’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, with roughly $4.3 million in trades recorded over the past 24 hours.

Upbit remained the country’s dominant exchange, recording approximately $224.2 million in trading volume over the same period. Although Korbit operates on a smaller scale, Mirae Asset’s larger ownership stake strengthens its position within South Korea’s regulated cryptocurrency industry.

Mirae Asset has expanded its Korbit ownership to more than 97%, reinforcing its long-term digital asset strategy. The acquisition preserves Korbit’s existing operations while giving the financial group greater control over one of South Korea’s licensed cryptocurrency exchanges.
