Why Did Elon Musk implement a Twitter View Limit?

Over the weekend, Twitter users were thrown into chaos when they started getting the “view rate limit exceeded” message while trying to read posts on the platform. It didn’t take long before Elon Musk tweeted to explain the new change and the reason behind it.

The popular micro-blogging platform imposed a rate limit to the number of posts accounts can access daily. This wasn’t generally appreciated by the community. According to Twitter CEO Elon Musk, the view limit was imposed to address the high level of “data scrapping” and “system manipulations”.

What exactly is data scrapping?

For those that might be coming across this word for the first time, data scrapping refers to pulling data and information out of a website into a spreadsheet. What this means is that users’ information is taken from a website for analysis, processing, or presentation.

Data scrapping could be beneficial to individuals and businesses to scale their operations, however, some people use data scrapping to harm others. They set up data scrapping to gather social media profiles and/or email addresses and sell them to spammers.

Data scrapping can also be used to steal personal data such as names, birthdays, and other sensitive information.

Apparently, the Twitter community was not pleased with the development. Lots of comments began to pour in criticizing the move. Elon Musk later came back to announce an increase to the previously announced limit. The limits were raised to 8,000, 800, and 400, respectively.

Shortly after, he returned with a new limit increase which now raise the number of viewable posts per day to 10,000, 1,000, and 500 respectively.

Elon Musk’s justification

In a move to justify the action, Twitter CEO Elon Musk put out a tweet claiming that he is doing the world “a good deed” with the view limit. According to him, people are “Twitter addicts.” He said the move is to encourage people to spend less time on the platform and “go outside” to engage with the real world.
