Ethereum Targets 200 Million Gas Limit as Glamsterdam Upgrade Reaches Final Testnet

Ethereum Targets 200 Million Gas Limit as Glamsterdam Upgrade Reaches Final Testnet

In Brief:

  • Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade targets a 200 million gas limit, potentially increasing block processing capacity by approximately 3.3 times upon implementation.

  • Hoodi’s October 26 activation will test higher gas limits alongside proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, and revised gas pricing mechanisms.

  • Ethereum researchers identified 300 million gas as a potential future target, while Hegotá preparations involve 23 proposed network improvements.

Ethereum developers have scheduled Glamsterdam’s final testnet activation, bringing the network closer to a proposed increase in block processing capacity. The upgrade targets a gas limit increase from 60 million to 200 million, potentially allowing more transactions per block.

According to Ethereum researcher Toni Wahrstätter, Hoodi will serve as the final testing environment before Glamsterdam reaches mainnet. The proposed adjustment represents a 3.3-fold increase, depending on transaction complexity and gas consumption. Developers scheduled Hoodi’s activation for October 26, following Glamsterdam’s deployment on Sepolia on October 6.

Ethereum Developers Prepare Hoodi for 200 Million Gas Limit Increase

Glamsterdam will activate on Hoodi at epoch 132,352 and slot 4,235,264, corresponding to October 26 at 17:42:48 UTC. During activation, Hoodi’s gas limit will increase to 200 million through the network’s gas limit schedule.

This adjustment matches Sepolia’s configuration, allowing developers to assess Ethereum’s performance under higher processing demands. Increasing the gas limit could accommodate additional computational activity within each block, depending on transaction requirements.

Beyond capacity improvements, Glamsterdam introduces several changes designed to strengthen Ethereum’s base-layer performance and resource management. These include enshrined proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, and revised gas pricing mechanisms.

Enshrined proposer-builder separation reorganizes block production responsibilities, while access lists identify blockchain data required during transaction execution. Together, these changes support Ethereum’s broader scaling roadmap while addressing infrastructure requirements associated with increased network activity.

Ethereum Researchers Outline Further Scaling Targets and Hegotá Plans

Wahrstätter identified a potential 300 million gas limit as another milestone beyond Glamsterdam’s proposed 200 million target. That higher figure remains a possibility rather than a confirmed upgrade commitment.

Meanwhile, Ethereum developers are preparing Hegotá, another network upgrade planned for 2027. Wahrstätter identified 23 Ethereum Improvement Proposals under consideration, including FOCIL and Frame Transactions.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has identified Hegotá as potentially the network’s final conventional upgrade before more advanced cryptographic developments.

Developers have not confirmed Glamsterdam’s mainnet activation date, which client teams will determine following coordination. Hoodi’s activation represents another testing milestone for Ethereum’s proposed gas limit expansion and broader network scaling plans.
