Bitcoin futures activity has climbed above $140 billion as the cryptocurrency approaches a critical price range that could determine its next move. The increase comes as Bitcoin trades near $81,615, with investors maintaining substantial positions despite recent selling pressure.
According to CoinGlass data, futures open interest has increased from approximately $110 billion in August to more than $140 billion. This growth follows Bitcoin’s advance from around $64,000 to above $80,000 during the same period.
Meanwhile, open interest measured in Bitcoin has approached 100,000 BTC, recovering from lower readings recorded during June and July. Trading volumes have also remained relatively stable, reflecting sustained participation across the derivatives market.
The increase in outstanding futures positions has coincided with Bitcoin’s consolidation below $84,000. Elevated leverage could amplify price movements if Bitcoin breaks beyond its established trading range.

Bitcoin’s daily chart shows the cryptocurrency trading above several important moving averages despite its retreat from the $84,000 region. The 50-day moving average stands near $80,800, providing immediate technical support following Bitcoin’s recent price decline. Meanwhile, the 100-day average sits around $77,500, while the 200-day average remains near $76,200.
On the upside, Bitcoin faces resistance between $84,000 and $86,000, where previous recovery attempts encountered selling pressure. This region rejected upward movements twice during September and October, establishing a significant barrier for buyers.

Beyond that range, the yearly high near $87,500 represents another important resistance level. A sustained breakout above this threshold could place the $90,000 price target within reach.
Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index currently stands near 45, compared with overbought readings recorded during August’s advance. The indicator reflects weaker momentum as the cryptocurrency consolidates around its intermediate moving average.
Rising Futures Leverage Raises Liquidation Risks Below $80,000
Despite growing derivatives participation, Bitcoin faces potential downside pressure if its price falls below the $80,000 support level. A breakdown could expose the 100-day moving average near $77,500, particularly if leveraged positions encounter forced liquidations.
Further support stands around $76,200, corresponding with the 200-day moving average. The combination of elevated futures open interest and nearby technical resistance places Bitcoin within a closely watched trading range.
Bitcoin remains above its longer-term moving averages, while $87,500 represents the major breakout threshold toward $90,000. Conversely, losing $80,000 could increase selling pressure and expose lower support levels.
