Investigations began by the British Army after it confirmed its social media accounts Youtube and Twitter were hacked by crypto scammers.
The force’s Twitter account was hacked and the profile picture was replaced with their signature cartoon monkey and also with the name of NFT group Bapesclan. The description was also changed to “#1 metavesto clan on the ETH chain with multi-billion dollar experience. Powered by @chaintchlabs.”
The hackers made the account look to be connected with The Possessed NFT collection which is developed by the PSSSSD Labs. They retweeted several links to NFT gateways and flooded the account with several crypto posts.
After the Army restored the account and all crypto-related related posts were deleted, they tweeted an apology saying they will conduct a few investigations and learn from the incident. See tweet below;
Apologies for the temporary interruption to our feed. We will conduct a full investigation and learn from this incident. Thanks for following us and normal service will now resume.

Meanwhile, on Youtube, the Army account was replaced with the name “Ark Invest” which is known to be a popular global investment company. However, it is still unclear if the company is behind the breach.

The Verge also reported that on the Youtube account, an interview of Billionaire Elon Musk talking about crypto was promoted, along with old Livestream videos by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
The Livestream aired by the hackers was reportedly watched by thousands of viewers. According to blogger Molly White, the videos included a cover directing users to Bitcoin and Ethereum scams.
The Youtube account was restored but later was taken down by Youtube for violating Community Guidelines.
Once restored and before the channel was taken down, the Army was quick to put out a video on the Youtube channel updating the public on on-air and land defense, soldiers, organization, organization and army sport. Users commented and trolled the post with some writing “Great crypto advice” and “Where are my NFT drops”.
The Ministry of Defense Press Office put out a tweet acknowledging the breach and also confirmed that investigations are currently going on to determine who was behind it. See tweet below;
We are aware of a breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts and an investigation is underway.
The Army takes information security extremely seriously and is resolving the issue. Until their investigation is complete it would be inappropriate to comment further.
