North Korean Hackers Target Crypto: CZ Warns of Dangers and Insider Threats

  • CZ warns crypto community about growing threat from North Korean hackers.
  • Hackers use deceptive tactics to infiltrate crypto exchanges and wallets.
  • $400 million lost in recent cyberattack targeting U.S. crypto exchange.

Changpeng Zhao, has issued an urgent warning to the crypto community, highlighting the growing threat of North Korean hackers. In a post on his X account, he shared insight into the advanced and cunning tactics these cybercriminals use to infiltrate exchanges and steal cryptocurrencies.

CZ reported that North Korean hackers have become more advanced in their operations. The first method is pretending to be a job applicant, namely, to work in the fields of development, finance, or cybersecurity. By hacking into a company, they are able to steal valuable data and exploit vulnerabilities.

Hackers Use Deceptive Tactics to Gain Access and Control Over Crypto Data

Another common tactic involves impersonating employers during supposed job interviews. In these fake interviews, the hackers may claim technical difficulties and ask the target to download an “update” via a malicious link. After clicking on the link, the victim installs malware, which gives the hacker control over the device.

Moreover, hackers have been identified masquerading as customers with problems with their accounts. They email malicious links to the customer care departments, and in the process, they install harmful viruses that eliminate systems when opened. On other occasions, hackers have bribed the staff or collaborated with contracted suppliers to get access to confidential information.

The Urgent Need for Better Security Measures

CZ highlighted a recent breach involving an Indian outsourcing service, which resulted in the leak of user data from a major U.S. crypto exchange. Over $400 million in cryptocurrency was lost due to this attack.

To mitigate these risks, CZ encouraged crypto exchanges and wallet providers to improve security. He stressed that rigorous employee training is necessary to avoid downloading files of unknown origin and clicking on suspicious links. Moreover, employers ought to conduct thorough due diligence on their job applicants, especially in positions that would allow them to access sensitive data.

With hackers constantly advancing their tactics, CZ’s warning is an important message to the crypto community to be more alert and active in their security measures.
