Ripple CEO Says BIS Review Validates XRP Ledger for Institutional Data Integrity

In Brief:

  • BIS tested XRPL through a prototype that anchors cryptographic fingerprints, enabling institutions to verify official datasets without publishing sensitive information.
  • Garlinghouse highlighted XRPL’s low fees, fast settlement, and proven record, while BIS testing delivered efficient publication and verification performance results.
  • Researchers framed the system as blockchain-agnostic, supporting regulatory reporting and other applications without confirming BIS adoption of the XRP Ledger.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse views a BIS experiment as validation of the XRP Ledger’s institutional data verification capabilities. The Bank for International Settlements tested XRPL through a prototype created to protect the authenticity of official statistical information.

According to Garlinghouse, XRPL’s low fees, rapid settlement, and proven operational record made the network’s selection unsurprising. His response linked the BIS research directly with XRPL’s ability to support demanding systems requiring reliable and efficient infrastructure.

Researchers explored how institutions could verify published statistics without placing complete datasets or confidential information directly on a blockchain. Instead, the system converted every dataset into a unique cryptographic fingerprint before recording its corresponding proof through the ledger.

BIS researchers applied the system to Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange, a standard format for distributing structured official statistics. They processed each dataset with SHA3-512 hashing before combining individual records through a specialized Merkle tree structure. That process created one consolidated root, allowing multiple records to receive verification without requiring numerous separate blockchain transactions.

BIS Research Highlights XRPL Performance

The BIS paper identified low nominal fees and rapid consensus finality among the reasons researchers selected the XRP Ledger. Under controlled testing conditions, the prototype recorded median publication times ranging between three and five seconds.

Meanwhile, verification required between one and two seconds, supporting efficient authenticity checks for users and automated systems. The framework also used verifiable credentials connecting each statistical fingerprint with the identity of its recognized publisher.

Wider Applications Extend Beyond Statistics

However, the experiment does not confirm that BIS has adopted XRPL throughout its broader operations or financial infrastructure. Researchers described the system as a proof of concept and emphasized that the framework remained compatible with other blockchains.

Nevertheless, Garlinghouse considered XRPL’s selection meaningful recognition of capabilities Ripple has promoted for institutional applications. His reaction centered on technical performance instead of XRP’s market price, placing the research within a broader verification. Ultimately, the BIS experiment gives XRPL a documented role in testing secure and independently verifiable official statistical information.
