BlackRock has applied to launch a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund offering downside protection alongside limited exposure to potential price gains. According to its latest filing with the SEC, BlackRock plans to introduce the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF, offering exposure to IBIT or similar Bitcoin investments.
Unlike traditional spot Bitcoin ETFs, the proposed fund seeks to limit losses while capping potential returns, although exact protection levels remain unspecified. These conditions would determine the fund’s performance during Bitcoin price declines and rallies.

BlackRock Expands Its Bitcoin ETF Product Lineup
BlackRock’s application adds another investment approach to its existing Bitcoin products, which already offer direct exposure and options income. The company launched its flagship iShares Bitcoin Trust in January 2024, establishing a major presence in the spot ETF market.
IBIT holds more than $65 billion in assets under management, making it the largest fund in its category. In June, BlackRock introduced the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, designed to generate monthly income through options premiums.

That strategy differs from the Managed Protect proposal, which prioritizes downside protection while retaining some potential gains. Both products offer alternatives to holding a conventional spot Bitcoin fund, although their objectives and potential outcomes differ.
BlackRock Maintains Bitcoin and Ethereum Strategy Amid Wider ETF Expansion
According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart, the Managed Protect proposal represents BlackRock’s third Bitcoin ETF filing. Seyffart noted that BlackRock still offers cryptocurrency products covering only Bitcoin and Ethereum despite broader market expansion.
Other issuers have launched ETFs linked to XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin, widening the range of digital assets available through funds. BlackRock has instead expanded the investment strategies available within its established cryptocurrency product categories. The filing highlights BlackRock’s efforts to offer different Bitcoin investment structures without adding another cryptocurrency to its lineup.
