Ripple Urged to Speed Up XRP Escrow Distribution by Bill Morgan

Ripple Urged to Speed Up XRP Escrow Distribution by Bill Morgan

What to know:

  • Bill Morgan called for larger monthly XRP releases from escrow.
  • Ripple still holds roughly 38.15 billion XRP in escrow accounts.
  • A faster distribution could bring XRP closer to full circulation sooner.

Prominent XRP commentator Bill Morgan has urged Ripple to accelerate the release of its escrowed XRP holdings, arguing that the company should distribute more tokens into circulation instead of returning substantial amounts to escrow each month.

According to Morgan, Ripple’s current approach extends the timeline for achieving a fully circulating XRP supply. He stated that reducing the amount placed back into escrow could help remove long-term uncertainty surrounding future token releases.

Morgan shared his views on X, where he said Ripple should release more of the one billion XRP unlocked every month and re-lock a smaller portion. According to the commentator, reaching full circulation sooner could strengthen XRP’s standing within the digital asset market.

His remarks come as community members continue to debate Ripple’s management of its escrow reserves. While many holders support the company’s measured distribution model, others believe a quicker release schedule would provide greater clarity regarding XRP’s future supply.

Ripple Continues Gradual XRP Distribution

Ripple unlocks one billion XRP on the first day of every month through its escrow program. However, the company routinely returns a large percentage of those tokens to escrow after determining operational and institutional requirements.

As a result, only a portion of the unlocked supply enters circulation each month. This method has enabled Ripple to maintain a predictable distribution schedule while gradually increasing XRP’s circulating supply.

Some estimates suggest Ripple’s escrow holdings could take nearly nine years to be fully distributed if the current pace remains unchanged. However, determining an exact timeline remains difficult because the amount re-locked varies from month to month.

On June 1, Ripple unlocked one billion XRP through three separate transactions valued at more than $1.33 billion. Nevertheless, the company later returned a substantial share of those tokens to escrow.

Ripple Chief Technology Officer Emeritus David Schwartz has previously defended this approach. He explained that Ripple voluntarily relocks XRP that it does not immediately require for business operations and institutional activities. Current market data indicates that approximately 61.85 billion XRP are circulating globally. Meanwhile, Ripple still controls around 38.15 billion XRP through escrow arrangements.

Some holders have proposed burning Ripple’s escrow reserves to reduce supply. However, Schwartz previously rejected that idea, citing Stellar’s token burn as an example of a measure that produced only temporary market effects.

Conclusion

Morgan’s latest comments have renewed debate over Ripple’s long-term distribution strategy. While Ripple continues to support gradual releases, advocates of faster distributions argue that reducing escrow holdings sooner could ease supply-related concerns and allow XRP’s market performance to reflect broader adoption trends.
